If you had told me a couple of years ago that I’d be sat here typing a story that involved multiple use of the words armpits and deodorant... oh how I would laugh. Yet here I am, about to share why a ‘normal’ gal like me stopped using an essential product I had been using for almost two decades.
Seven years ago I qualified as a Yoga Teacher. During the training we learned of the philosophies behind Yoga including Ahimsa which is an ancient Indian principle of nonviolence. Bear with me here, I’m not going to get much more woo woo than this I promise. Essentially, this means acting without harm to animals, humans and the planet but also, yourself. That’s why so many yogis, hippies and practitioners of certain religions refrain from eating meat, drinking alcohol, using make up and beauty products. The latter can contain so many chemicals that are tested on animals but also harmful to our skin, blood stream and the environment. It’s actually astounding they are allowed to be made and sold. So around this time I was exposed to a new collective of people who no longer used the products I had used for as long as I could remember. Naturally curious, it got me thinking about my own consumerism and use.
I delved into the world of natural beauty products starting with researching anti-perspirant and deodorant. What I learned had my jaw hanging off its hinges. Some of the facts make perfect sense and aren’t ground breaking, I had simply never thought of them in such a regard. For instance, antiperspirants stop you from sweating. Well yes of course, the clue is in the name and that’s why we purchase them; no one likes being a Sweaty Betty.
Considering this a little more… how exactly do antiperspirants stop us from doing a natural (and highly essential) bodily function? After all, this is how our body cools down. Well, they use a cocktail of chemicals to block our sweat glands and thus our pits stay dry, our clothes stay clean and we feel fresh and fabulous. Alas, there is nothing fresh & fabulous going on behind the scenes.
I'm told natural deodorant is often the first step in stripping back your use of chemical laden products. And so off I went, into the weird world of natural deodorants. Cue years of searching in stores, spending a fortune and smelling funky, I’m not going to lie. I never did find the perfect natural deodorant... so, we created one ourselves. For two years we have trialled, tested and lost sleep over our baby.
Over the coming weeks I'll be sharing lots more with you, including the nitty gritty on specific ingredients and what the deal is with armpit detoxes.
So now you know one of the 'why's?' behind Natch Essentials, it's time for you to meet our Natural Deodorant yourself.
